On Saturday, September 26, the Canoe Journeys Program will culminate as we gather to honor the maiden launch of the wiigwaas jiimaan (birchbark canoe) at Joni’s Beach on Mooningwanekaanging (Madeline Island). Red Cliff Ojibwe Elder Marvin DeFoe and apprentices worked through the month of August to craft the canoe. The journey started with the construction of a minis jiimaan wigwam (island canoe lodge) and the restoration of a 125-year-old wiigwaas jiimaan. Thousands of visitors experienced the Canoe Journeys program in person, and this canoe launch will honor traditional craft, teamwork, and community.
Community gatherings to celebrate Indigenous watercraft and commemorate the 1854 Treaty at La Pointe are scheduled throughout the weekend on Mooningwanekaaning. The maiden canoe launch and ceremony is scheduled for approximately 10 am on Saturday, September 26 at Joni’s Beach. (The Madeline Island Museum will open at 1 pm.) ... See MoreSee Less
